Consider an example: the word "photosynthesis" is unlikely to appear in a random document. However, given the fact that it occurs in a given document, you are much more likely to encounter it again. Word-burstiness tries to capture the notion that you should be less surprised about subsequent occurrences of a word in a document than when it appeared for the first time.
