This is a review of Etzioni_2004_methods_for_domain_independent_information_extraction_from_the_web_an_experimental_comparison by user:Suranah.

This paper discusses the system KnowItAll system which tries to attempt a more language and domain independent approach. To bootstrap their method, they use more generic techniques like rule learning and list extraction, and the more interesting subclass extraction which helped their recall.

While I do recall that many experimental QA systems use search engines, but this is the first time I have heard an IE system do so. Questions like whether they can really new discover relations using such a method, are left undiscussed in the paper.
