This is a review of Borthwick 1998 exploiting diverse knowledge sources via maximum entropy in named entity recognition by user:liuy.

The paper explores maximum entropy method for the task of proper name recognition. The use of max-ent criterion let the system utilize a variety of sources that provides diversity of knowledge.

Statistical model used by the work allows automatic pattern generation, and thus is a big advantage over those system required tuning by hand.

I like this work because it is built on solid theory of maximum entropy. However, its reliance on other handcoded system in achieving scores higher the state-of-the-art, shows its certain dependency.
